Program Details

Overview: The bill establishes a pilot program through the Older Americans Act to support and improve the physical and mental health of caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.

Grants are for area agencies on aging, senior centers, higher education institutions, and Tribal organizations.   They may be used to carry out projects that assist family caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders.

Entities eligible for grants include area agency on aging, multipurpose senior centers, institutions of higher education, or tribal organizations.  The grant application must document:  their accessible physical space; assurance they will submit outcome data; and a description of how they will share necessary information about the caregiver and care recipient with providers involved in the project.

Grant funds can be used for providing cognitive health screenings, care consultations, education, family caregiver support groups, bereavement services, insurance support, and social and cultural activities.

Grant entities must report data on enrollment, baseline health information, payment, and outcomes to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Information on enrollment and key health indicators will be shared on an ongoing basis to measure changes in health and well-being.

Within 120 days after the fiscal year, the Assistant Secretary of Aging will report on outcome data, including differences between the estimated and calculated payment amounts and changes in health indicators.
