Program Details

Overview: The bill establishes a free counseling program for next of kin and caregivers of veterans who died by suicide. The Secretary may provide counseling service if they are reasonably accessible and substantially equivalent or superior to similar services furnished by the VA to such individuals. The VA may coordinate with a federal, state, or private entity to provide the services. The VA must publish information relating to the program and eligible individuals.

Former Volunteer Caregiver

A former volunteer caregiver is an individual age 18 or older who provided the veteran with counseling, social work, or other personal care services without compensation and for at least three months.  Services must have been provided in connection with a covered veterans’ service organization prior to the death of the veteran.
