Overview: Ensure that essential caregivers of residents of Medicare and Medicaid-funded facilities maintain access to residents during designated emergency periods when visitation is otherwise restricted. This applies to skilled nursing facilities, intermediate care facilities, and inpatient rehabilitation facilities.
Essential Caregiver
An essential caregiver is identified by the resident as someone who provides them with daily living assistance, emotional support, or companionship. Essential caregivers must comply with facility safety protocols.
Facility’s Limited Right to Restrict Access
Allows facilities to temporarily restrict access for essential caregivers during an emergency for up to seven days.
